Week 2: Vampires: Discussion Post

This week we are talking about Vampires, the age old cliche of undead blood sucking, sun avoiding, garlic hating goer of the night. Although they can be as overused as other horror icons such as zombies, and aliens, they can be incredibly unique and different from the everyday vampire story.

More recently’ vampires seem to be shown under a much better light and aren't viewed as malevolent  as the first original vampires. Most of them are awkward, conflicted, and are trying there best to fit in. They tend to try to distance themselves and stay away from temptation. As seen with our “vegetarian” vampires Louis and Edward and similarly both of these vampires have what would be considered taboo relationships.

The one common theme in all of these stories is betrayal. Vampires are seducers. In Queen of the Damned, Lestat seems to betray the infatuation he had for the Vampire Queen Akasha, and for love of Jesse, a human. Similar to in Interview with a vampire, Lestat is betrayed by Louis and their daughter. Lestat just can’t get enough of back-stabbing. Twilight also had this when Edward left Bella for a time. When you have an eternity to live forever, drama is most definitely going to pop up.

Regarding popular series like Vampire Masquerade, there are so many different types of vampires all with their own distinct way of hunting, with their own clans. This is probably my favorite portrayal of Vampirism as it’s all very different. For example, Malkavian are designed to spread insanity, Or more well known, Nosferatu aren’t your average pretty boy, since they live out in the sewers as hideous disgusting monsters. Most vampires are on a spectrum from monsters who want to kill you to just normal or slightly emo guys who seem out of place because they have a different diet from anyone else.

The real horror in Vampire movies and novels are the fact of being scared you will live alone for eternity, and the haunting truth of having a broken heart for the rest of that eternity. For romance, and horror the thought of being alone for the rest of your life goes hand and hand for both.

  1. One thing to consider is why are vampires so popular? If you think about it, their supernatural characteristics are what allows them to behave as they do. In regards to Lestat and Louis, they personify the "drama" often found within a human relationship, but due to their nature, it is on a magnified scale. This also gives them a pass for societal norms, which allows them to behave erratically.
